OCTOBER 31st - XBR and FUEL TV join forces for the 2009 XBR Summer Series
XBR and Foxtel's FUEL TV will be working together to create 5 x10min episodes during the XBR Summer Series. One Track = One Episode. The primary focus will be on the PRO TEAMS' CHALLENGE -but there will be interviews and cut aways from different classes and events during the series. We are very excited at this project and anticipate that it will be the first of many projects together.

OCTOBER 29th - XBR Trans Tasman Test Team Challenge

Congratulations to both the XBR AUSTRALIA Senior boys and Senior girls' team who - like their Mighty Eleven Australian Team members - successfully defeated the New Zealand Trans Tasman Test Teams in Gisborne, New Zealand on the weekend.

The campaign got off to a shaky start when Senior Boys' Team Captain; Adam Shields took a nasty spill over the handlebars in the first moto, With a sore wrist and swollen foot - he battled on for the rest of the day. However, it seemed that we needed to even the playing field a little more with the girls - so Madisson Janssen, Chelsea King and Lacey Oliver - thought they would bang handlebars with each other in the second moto - resulting in King and Oliver eating dirt. Oliver sustained some swelling in the knee and even after considerable time in the ambo tent would not race again for the weekend. She did however, frock up and roll off the gate for the remaining competition in order to gain her team a valuable point each round.

At the end of the first day and after 3 motos - the Aussie Boys and Girls were both out in front.
On Sunday - Shieldsy's injury looked like it may wipe him out as well. However, with some medical attention from Darryl Goodwin (father of Darryn) and Graham Walker (Sarah Walker's father NZ) we were able to patch him up for the final two rounds of battle.
Whilst the Senior Boys continued to stretch their lead - putting themselves into an unbeatable position going into the final moto, the Kiwi girls kept chipping away at the Aussie lead. Going into the last moto - the Kiwi girls would need a 1, 2, 3 finish to snatch victory from us and with Hayley Gedye bursting out in front and Emily Allison hot on her tale - it was left to team Captain Melinda McLeod to chase them down and prevent another narrow win for the Kiwi girls. ( Last year the Aussie Girls went down by 1 point!) Melinda pulled in 2nd and the Aussie girls secured the victory.

Final Results
XBR AUSTRALIA GIRLS
101 Melinda McLeod (Capt), Lacey Oliver, Madisson Janssen and Chelsea King
NEW ZEALAND GIRLS
94 Hayley Gedye (Capt.), Emily Allison, Nicole Wright and Cara Leyton
XBR AUSTRALIA BOYS
115 Adam Shields (Capt), Darryn Goodwin, Bodi Turner and Madison Denholm
NEW ZEALAND BOYS
80 Nicholas Fox (Capt.) Kane Barry, Trent Jones and Bradley Gates

This was XBR's first venture in choosing and managing a team for a Trans Tasman Test and we have loved it. We will be choosing teams to defend the titles next year and will let you know more about that soon.
I would like to thank our riders, their parents, our sponsors - BMX MAD, ALTEGRA, HRVFITNESS , BMX NZ, the billet familes and the wonderful people of New Zealand who make us feel so welcome every time we go over. If you have never been to a North Island champs - join us on our AUSSIE INVASION tour next year - when we take on the Kiwis in their BMX Stronghold of Cambridge. When it comes to putting on an event and running it smoothly - these guys just know how to do it!
Finally - Congrats to our little masters - the MIGHTY ELEVEN'S who snatched a victory from the hands of defeat. Go guys and thanks for keeping the Aussie tent buzzing.

See you at the Summer Series - Jan 10 to Jan 17 Sydney 2009 - Photos will be online next week

AUGUST 21st 2008 - STROMBERGS WINS GOLF for LATVIA - CHAUSSON WINS GOLD FOR FRANCE

WOW! I was rushing back from a photo shoot when a mate rang me up and told me to dial into a local radio station. Anyone who wondered if BMX was going to get anything out of these olympics has had their questions answered. The radio station that I was listening to was saying how BMX HAS A PLACE at the OLYMPICS! I was going a little mental - in fact I was yelling at the car radio as I was trying to find out what happened in the finals (Women) after Nicole crashed. Got home just in time to see the Jared Graves taken out by a crashing Sifiso NHLAPO from SA. That's racing and Strombergs took the win from Mike Day - with dR in for 3rd. Here are the results.

AUGUST 21st 2008 - TIME FOR AN OLYMPIC CHAMPION??? or not?

Reports in saying that the weather has forced the semi finals to be put on hold. We will let you know when more information comes to hand. BMX has been postponed until tomorrow due to rain

AUGUST 20th 2008 - BMX ROCKS THE WORLD

An exciting and disappointing day for Australia as Luke Madill misses the cut for the Semi's - however Graves and Willers are looking good and Kama is still in the mix - with anything possible. TIme for me to go and actually do some work. Will be back tomorrow and will be uploading results as they happen.

3rd QUARTER FINAL RESULTS

WILLERS PULLS 2nd to Mike Day and WILLERS is looking good! and will move through in 2nd position from his finals - see below

2nd MOTO - Dutch - Van Der Weisen eats some ashphalt and takes out a good deal of the field - first rider from gate one not to win - only because he crashed. Sifiso is also looking good - go the South African!

3rd MOTO - KAMA makes it through to the SEMI FINALS

4th MOTO - GRAVES takes another win and LUKE MADILL scores 4th and is OUT! What can I say - everyone in Australia knows how much Luke put into getting to Beijing. That's racing - PROKOP is also gone and from here on end - it will be carnage for big names after each round.

All results are below from each of the qualifiers. If you are reading this and haven't been watching the TV - get ONE!! and tune in - it is so exciting to watch the sport that we love up there -and more exciting to actually know people who are participating in an olympic event.

I am watching this all on channel 7 - who are giving some great coverage to BMX. Thanks Channel 7 (apart from the dodgy commentators - who struggle to even pronounce Luke Madill's name properly!!!)

2ND QUARTER FINAL

WILLERS PULLS 3RD BEHIND Mike Day and dR
KAMA pulls 3rd behind Stromberg & De Wilde - Kama needs at least 3rd again to stay in the competition
GRAVES takes the win - I thi9nk Luke blew a tyre and his Olympics is all but over - he will need to pull the win in the next heat to stay in the competition. Fingers crossed he can do it.

All winners are taking the inside lane and so far - no-one has lost from LANE 1!!!! Perhaps it is time UCI reviewed the start gate of a BMX track as there is clearly and advantage in riding from the inside.

1ST QUARTER FINAL
WILLERS pulls 4th in his first run
KAMA pulls 7th
GRAVES takes the WIN with MADILL in 6th (rider crashed in front and he clipped the bike)

Check out Wade BOOTES - hanging out on the start hill!!!!

Well today the time trials get underway and it is being streamed live at http://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/live-video/ I was a little over excited yesterday - but I am still poised by my computers and TVs ready to bounce updates as soon as I see them. There are plenty of sites for photos etc - I recommend checking out www.bmxmania.com Jerry Landrum is the man on the ground there. Also Shane Jenkins has it under control at www.bmxultra.com Gotta run so I can make sure everything is tuned and I can bounce updates every few minutes or so

TIME TRIAL 1
JARED GRAVES 36.372
MARC WILLERS 36.725
LUKE MADILL 36.923
KAMAKAZI 37.054

Somebody shoot the idiots calling BMX... PLEASE!!!! Shenaze Reade took a spill in the berm and took off a bit of skin - but I don't think it will slow her down. Anne-Caroline put in the fastest lap with Sarah Walker in for second - see below. Tanya and Nicole are right in there

Girls ROUND 1 = TIME TRIAL

AUGUST 19th 2008 -

Today is the first day of BMX Racing in the Olympic Games. It will be history in the making with 32 men and 16 women battling it out for a place on the podium. There are plenty of places to catch the action - or if you miss it we will try and give you the heads up as it happens. Check out BMX MANIA's site www.bmxmania.com/olympics08.htm - JERRY LANDRUM is rocking it over there in China - so tune in somewhere.

THE MEN: Once the men are cut down to 16 - any rider in the pack could win. Chuck a blanket over them - they all have the goods to stand on that podium and no one deserves it more than any other. I have my fingers crossed that the Madill, Graves, Kama and Willers will be there somewhere. We will all be yelling at our computers/ TVs to spur these guys on.

THE WOMEN: The probability of winning gold for any of our girls will be tough - Shenaze Reade has a date with destiny and we wait to see if Sarah Walker (NZ), The French or anyone else can stop her. The Aussie Girls of Tania Bailey and Nicole Calisto will fight it out for a spot in the finals and from there - it is all down to one race - and anything can and probably will happen.

I recommend not pulling any tricks until after the finish line (refer to winter Olympics - boarder cross for girls!)

GOOD LUCK TO ALL RIDERS.

We will be bringing you updates as they come to hand... I am sitting at my computer and plugged into TV and the Internet.

XBR has been in hybernation over winter as we used this time to regroup and re-assess things. We WILL be bringing out a SEPTEMBER edition of XBR and will return to a MONTHLY PUBLICATION after that.

JULY 23rd

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM BUBBA HARRIS
"On Monday July 21st, I was released from Redline Bicycles."
"With my injuries and recent surgery, I was unable to fulfill my obligations under the current contract. After 8 years with Redline I want to thank them for everything that they've done for me. I wish all of my teammates the best in the future and will always consider them my teammates."
"As for me, I will be back and stronger than ever.....you haven't seen the last of me. While the chapter of my racing career with Redline is closed, I look forward to beginning a new chapter with a new sponsor. I would like to thank my sponsors that have shown me their continued support, VISA, NIKE, Kronik, Lizard Skins and Industrial. To all the Bubba Harris fans, I look forward to seeing you at the track very soon. I know this experience will make me a better person and BMXer in the future."
Thanks you, Bubba Harris

As for XBR - next issue will be out in August (probably after the Olympics) and clubs should be receiving a letter from us in the next 10 days asking for their support going forward. More info soon... Ed (Gavin D)

JULY 4th - XBR is Searching for riders for SENIOR TEST TEAM to race against NZ
XBR is trying to put together a Senior Men's Team and a Senior Women's Team to race against New Zealand in Gisborne, NZ in late October this year at their North Island Championships

Each team will be made up of 2 x 14 yr olds and 2x15yr olds

Riders will need to be able to pay for a return airfare to Auckland, NZ. BMXNZ and host families will take over after that. It is anticipated that we will all depart Auckland around 6pm on Thursday 23rd October and would return to catch flights home on Monday 27th of October.

If you think that you are one of Australia's fastest riders in this age group and would be interested in being a part of this event - please send an email to editor@xbr.com.au or phone/sms Gavin D on 0412 246012 by Sunday 6th July.

Mike Day has made it through the USA Olympic selection trials to join KYLE BENNETT as two of the three representatives for the USA Olympic BMX Team. JILL KYNTNER will be the sole USA woman representative. Australian team will be announced at the end of the month.

TWO COOLS for XBR COACHING SUPER-CLINIC!!

Canadian born Supercross rider SAMANTHA COOLS (World 5) and her brother KEN COOLS (NZ High Performance Coach) will be joining LUKE MADILL, ALEX CAMERON, SARAH WALKER (W3-20" & 24"), GLENN CODEGA & BRETT SCRUSE at the 2009, XBR Coaching Super-Clinic in Sydney, NSW from JANUARY 6th-8th. There are 80 places available in the clinic and entry forms will be available in the next issue of XBR and online at www.xbr.com.au as of JULY 1st. The XBR Coaching Super-clinic is a great way to prepare for the XBR SUMMER SERIES: January 10th - January 17th XBR has arranged for a bus from Nerang to Sydney and is in the process of hunting down cheap accommodation in and around Sydney for riders and their families

JUNE 11 - XBR TO PROCEED WITH INDEPENDENT RACE EVENTS AFTER ACCC REPORT
After BMXA threatened "disciplinary action" against clubs, officials and riders involved in the XBR Autumn series - in the best interest of all concerned - we cancelled the series. We then sought legal council and then wrote to the ACCC (Australian Competition Consumer Commission) and asked them to investigate what we believed was "Anti-competitive behaviour" and potentially a breach of the Trade Practices Act.

After two months of investigation - the ACCC reported back to XBR.

Here is some of what they had to say

" With regard to BMX events run independently of BMXA/BMXV, their concern is that their clubs, riders or officials who may wish to be associated or involved in these events are made aware that the protections normally provided by BMXA/BMXV would or may not apply to such events. That is, the insurance cover and any other liability that may be attributable to BMXA/BMXV in events the latter organise or sanction, may not apply here. As I understand BMXA/BMXV, that is the extent of their concern, or should be. Their clubs, members, officials and even municipal councils normally associated with BMXA/BMXV events should clearly understand the different situation they may face in participating in non-sanctioned BMXA/BMXV events. It follows that the member clubs, riders, officials etc would be free to exercise their choice as to whether they may wish to participate in such events.

Should BMXA/BMXV wish to go further than alerting the parties to the distinction between their events and others, and impose disciplinary action, sanction or threats on clubs, riders, officials etc if they were associated in events not sanctioned by the two organisations, even in accordance with their current rules of affiliation or membership or constitution, they need to proceed with caution for fear of falling foul of the anticompetitive provisions of the Trade Practices Act 1974 (the Act). If BMXA/BMXV are minded to go down that path, they should seek legal advice in the matter and/or seek to avail themselves of the authorisation provisions of the Act. "

This report lends favour to BMXA/BMXV's flimsy excuse of "it was just an insurance matter" at the same time sending a clear warning to both associations that the ACCC is now aware of the matter and it will not tolerate anticompetitive behaviour. This is welcome news for XBR and as a result we can now confidently press on with plans to run more INDPENEDENT race events around Australia. We hope that riders and clubs now feel empowered to make up their own minds about where they want to race without fear of "Disciplinary Action" from any out of line bmx board.

XBR INDPENEDNT OLD SCHOOL RACES PLANNED - bring friends, get out the sidehacks and get practising for "HACK TO THE FUTURE"
NSW - Sunday 7th SEPTEMBER - track will be announced very soon - METRO SYDNEY
VIC - Saturday 20th SEPTEMBER - track will be announced very soon - GREATER MELBOURNE

JUNE 9 - AUSTRALIA maintain their grip on the MIGHTY 11s Trophy
On a weekend that may have tested the greatest mathematician (How do you fit 3 Eleven year Race Classes into one race meeting?) the Australian Mighty eleven team proved to strong for the our friends across the ditch and Australia enjoyed another comprehensive victory. I will be back later today with the names of the riders who made the team for the return leg to NZ and some photos. Congratulations to all who competed and I look forward to going to GISBORNE, NZ in OCtober to see what the Kiwis unleash on our team.

If you are looking for any excuse to go to NZ - this is it - the MIGHTY 11s is part of the North Island Championship. Next to the XBR SUMMER SERIES - it is my favourite race event of the year. GO AND SUPPORT THE AUSSIES.

May 31 - TAIYUN - CHINA - FINAL RACE DAY - CRUISERS

May 31 - TAIYUN - CHINA - THIRD RACE DAY
Congratulations to SAM WILLOUGHBY - WORLD CHAMPION JUNIOR MEN, Was a big day at the pointy end of the BMX circuit with many riders battling for a spot on National Teams. It was good to see that South African Sifiso Nhlapo rode his way into the finals of the ELITE MEN and earned his country the right to field one rider at the Olympics - no prizes for guessing who that rider will be! Jared Graves continued with his fine form earning himself a W7 plate and left the Aussie selectors with a headache with Luke Madill and Kamakazi both going down in the Semi Finals. Lauren Reynolds picked up a W2 plate and Rachel Bracken picked up W3 in the Junior Women - with JOsh Callan doing Australia proud with a W5 in the Junior Men. Chasty just missed the cut in the Semis. Elite Women saw Sarah Walker from NZ back up her W2 plate from Canada with a W3 plate in China - showing that she is a definite medal contender in Beijing. Tania Bailey did the best out of the Aussie girls with a 7th place in the Semi Finals.

I was shocked to arrive home on my computer tonight to an email from Mark Squire of a mangled Aussie bike with the number 110 - my good mate Glen COdega's bike. Apparently he hit pretty hard and reports are sketchy at this stage - with the word around the track reporting broken collarbone, broken elbow and maybe spinal damage - I will try and bring you info on Glenn as soon as I hear. Good news is that Airlie Gooden is OK after her crash on day one.

Here is a photo of Glenn's bike from Mark Squire

Tune in tomorrow to see if MELINDA McLEOD and SARAH WALKER (NZ) can back up their W1 Rankings from 2007

May 28 - TAIYUN - CHINA
Just received our first report from Matt Dickinson - XBR's man on the ground in CHINA.
First practise session has gone without incident - Track is FAST and TECHNICAL. Smog is bad - making breathing difficult. Very low rider count so a good chance for some Aussies to bring home some world plates!

Bodi Turner - has no bike or clothes as they were lost at Beijing airport - fingers crossed that they will turn up later today.

IF YOU HAVE ANY PHOTOS OR INFORMATION FROM THE WORLD CHAMPS - please send them to editor@xbr.com.au

May 20
XBR has officially nominated through the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS for recognition of the largest gathering of BMX SIDEHACKS at a race event in the history of BMX. The record is scheduled for JANUARY 13 at MANLY/WARRINGAH BMX Track - so if you know of anyone with a SIDEHACK- get them pumped about this race - we need over 20 HACKS to set a new world record.

XBR is also currently working with a number of councils around the country to stage some OLD SCHOOL BMX RACES. These race events will be open to anyone and will be run under XBR RULES (not BMXA -so no licenses needed) These races will take place in SPRING and we will let you know more as soon as we can.

THE RISE AND FALL OF SIFISO NHLAPO

South African BMX star Sifiso Nhlapo spent Saturday night celebrating his victory in Round 11 of the European Champs and then spent Sunday night in a German hospital following a serious crash during Round 12 on Sunday.

Once he'd woken from being comatosed for four hours on Sunday night and given the all clear from doctors, Nhlapo was able to appreciate his second place overall in the 2008 European Championships, the most competitive international BMX series in the world.

Latvia's Maris Strombergs, Europe's current No.1 who is widely regarded as one of the favourites for an Olympic medal in Beijing this August, won the European Champs title, but it was the fresh-faced 20-year-old South African that almost upstaged the Latvians quest for the coveted continental championship crown.

On Saturday, Nhlapo was on fire, blazing his way through the qualification rounds to the final where he lined up against many of Europe's biggest stars, including Strombergs. Clad in his characteristic MTN-yellow strip, Nhlapo burst out of the starting gate and into the lead at the first jump. He then shot out of the first turn with a bike-length lead that he held throughout to claim his third win of the 2008 European Champs Series.

A perfect run through to a final podium place on Sunday could have seen Nhlapo challenging Strombergs for the Championship, but a crash in the quarterfinal ended Nhlapo's series prematurely. Two riders briefly clashed and bumped Nhlapo over the lip of a right-hand berm. His fall was relatively unspectacular, but he landed on a metal table off the track, which rendered him unconscious and had medics rushing him to hospital.

He regained consciousness four hours later and showed no signs of injury or illness and was discharged on Monday morning.

Round 2 of the Supercross World Cup is in Denmark this weekend and because of his crash, were not sure yet whether Sifiso will be able to race, said Mark Squire, Nhlapo's manager. It's a crucial event in terms of preparation for the World Champs later this month, but we'll know later this week what the doctors recommend.

Nhlapo's top-20 world ranking has put him in a position to be able to qualify for one of just 32 places at the Beijing Olympic Games. He will need to at least make the quarterfinals at the World Championships in China later this month to secure a place for South Africa at the Games.
